How do drivers stay safe?

War zone evacuation is dangerous, so drivers must take precautions and protect themselves.

Driver networks avoid the riskiest routes when evacuating.

Central roads are common military targets; drivers try to avoid them, especially when approaching a war zone.  Instead, they will take dirt roads or even go off-road when needed. Since drivers are often locals, they can find safer, less common routes.

After a rainstorm, these roads will be muddy, so evacuation vehicles run the risk of being stuck. That's why drivers usually request more maneuverable, off-road capable vehicles.

Before heading out, drivers gather information

from many sources - official announcements, other evacuation drivers and more.  The situation on the ground can change hour by hour, so it's critical to be informed and pay extra attention to conditions as you proceed.

Sometimes conditions deteriorate unexpectedly on the way. To stay safe, drivers will turn back.

For physical protection, drivers wear bulletproof vests and ballistic helmets.

As of May 30, we have delivered:

55 bullet-proof vests

35 ballistic helmets
